The Howling Chickens at Competition

The Howling Chickens made it through their first FLL Qualifier with poise and mutual respect. Even through several obstacles and last minute rule-changes, these five kids, only 9 and 10 years old, held their team to a high level of maturity and team spirit.

Their highest score in the Robot Game (what they worked so hard on!) was 54 points! That got them into 4th place, in the same league as teams that were older, more experienced, and with seasoned coaches. These kids worked so hard to make a good first outing, and they did, but they also had fun.

We’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to these kids, Andre Mackey, Donovan Rivel, Eden Kopke, Evan Mackey and Ollie Banks, who made us very proud as coaches. We’d also like to thank their parents, who took the time to get them to their practice sessions and encouraged them throughout the season. Another thanks to Jefferson County 4-H for supporting this journey. And finally the NW Discovery Lab, who provided the LEGO kits, laptops and over 60 hours of conference room/storage/kitchen usage at no cost, to enable these kids to take their first steps into programming, engineering and robotics.

Next summer we look forward to expanding this program and reaching more kids!
